Worked for Airbus UK and now live abroad?
Your pension may sit in the Airbus Group UK Pension Scheme, the Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan, a legacy DB section, a DC retirement plan, AVCs, transferred benefits or another arrangement connected to your service history.
The real question is not only whether your Airbus pension is still in place. It is whether the exact scheme, section, benefit type, pension increase rules, investment options, retirement access, tax treatment, currency exposure and death benefits still fit your life overseas.
You have the information. Now get advice on what it means for you.
This page can help you understand the key issues. But the right decision depends on your own pensions, investments, tax position, future plans and family circumstances.

Airbus UK pension review for expats
An Airbus UK pension review is important because former employees may hold benefits in more than one Airbus pension arrangement, with different rules depending on when they joined, their service history and the scheme section that applies.
Scheme research identifies the Airbus Group UK Pension Scheme and the Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan as the main arrangements to check.
The Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan is supported by DC-focused member and governance information. This suggests a retirement savings arrangement where investment strategy, charges, selected retirement age and retirement access need careful review.
The Airbus Group UK Pension Scheme may also include legacy occupational benefits. Former employees with older service may hold DB, hybrid, safeguarded or other legacy rights that need to be reviewed differently from a modern DC pension.
This does not mean a transfer is automatically right. Remaining in an existing Airbus pension may preserve valuable guaranteed income, pension increases, spouse benefits, trustee oversight, competitive DC charges, workplace investment options or protected features.
Before making any decision, a former Airbus employee should confirm:
- Whether their benefits sit in the Airbus Group UK Pension Scheme, Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan, a DB section, DC arrangement, AVC arrangement or another legacy structure.
- Whether they hold DB, DC, hybrid, AVC, transferred, legacy or safeguarded benefits.
- Whether their joining date, business area or historic service affects the pension section.
- Which trustee, administrator, provider or member contact route applies.
- How deferred DB benefits are revalued before retirement.
- How pension payments may increase once in payment.
- Whether drawdown, UFPLS, annuity purchase or transfer options are available.
- Whether spouse, dependant or beneficiary benefits apply.
- How the pension fits their overseas tax, currency, estate planning and retirement income needs.

Why your Airbus UK pension may need reviewing
You may have more than one Airbus pension arrangement
Former Airbus employees may have benefits in the Airbus Group UK Pension Scheme, the Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan or another historic arrangement. The exact scheme and section matter.
Legacy and DC benefits need different analysis
Older Airbus benefits may include DB or safeguarded features, while the Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan is DC-focused. These arrangements should not be treated as interchangeable.
Your investment strategy may be outdated
A DC retirement plan may still be invested around a default fund or selected retirement age chosen while you worked in the UK. That may no longer fit your plans abroad.
Your pension needs to fit life abroad
Former Airbus employees living overseas should review their UK pension against tax residency, future spending currency, retirement income needs and cross-border beneficiary planning.
What to check before making decisions about your Airbus UK pension
Which Airbus pension arrangement are you in?
Confirm whether your benefits sit in the Airbus Group UK Pension Scheme, Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan, a DB section, DC arrangement, AVC arrangement or another legacy structure.
What type of benefit do you hold?
Confirm whether your benefits are DB, DC, hybrid, AVC, transferred, legacy or safeguarded. Do not assume the pension is simply a DC pot or a transfer value.
Does your service history affect the terms?
Check whether your pension relates to an older Airbus business, particular joining date, transferred employment or historic section.
How does any DB pension increase?
If you hold DB benefits, request written confirmation of deferred pension revaluation before retirement and pension increases once income starts.
What investment strategy applies to DC benefits?
Check whether you are in default, lifestyle, target-date or self-selected funds, and whether your selected retirement age still fits your actual plans.
What retirement options are available?
Check normal retirement age, early retirement terms, lump sum rules, transfer rights, drawdown access and any section-specific features.
What death benefits apply?
Confirm spouse, civil partner, dependant and beneficiary benefits, especially where family members live overseas.
How does the pension fit retirement abroad?
Review the pension against your country of residence, likely retirement location, spending currency, tax position, other pensions, wider investments, estate planning and income needs.

Reading can help you understand the issues. But it cannot tell you what is right for your pension, retirement plans, investments, tax position or family circumstances.
If you are facing a financial decision, or simply know your current arrangements need reviewing, a conversation is usually more useful than another hour of research.
Why Airbus UK pensions can be more complicated for expats
Airbus UK pensions can be more complicated for expats because many former employees have long technical careers, international mobility and pension benefits built across different service periods.
Airbus operates across aerospace, defence, space, advanced manufacturing, engineering, aviation technology and project delivery. Former UK employees may include engineers, manufacturing specialists, aerospace project teams, technology staff, defence professionals, programme managers, finance teams and senior management.
Many Airbus professionals later work across Europe, the Middle East, North America or global aerospace markets. That can leave them with old UK pension rights alongside overseas employment income, foreign investments, other pensions and retirement plans spanning more than one country.
That creates several layers of planning complexity.
First, the Airbus Group UK Pension Scheme and Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan must be separated. A legacy pension arrangement may have DB or safeguarded rights, whereas the later retirement plan is DC-focused and may require a more investment-led review.
Second, DB and DC benefits need different analysis. A DB pension may provide guaranteed income, pension increases, spouse benefits and retirement terms that can be difficult to replace. A DC pension may offer investment flexibility and pension freedoms, but the member takes responsibility for investment risk and how income is drawn.
Third, a DC investment strategy may no longer fit retirement abroad. A default lifestyle strategy may have been designed around a UK retirement date, UK inflation assumptions or an annuity-based retirement approach that no longer reflects the member’s plans.
Fourth, Airbus employees may have pension fragmentation. A former employee may have moved between Airbus, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Babcock, Leonardo, Thales, QinetiQ, Atkins, engineering consultancies or overseas aerospace employers.
Fifth, beneficiary planning may be outdated. International relocation, marriage, divorce, children, a changed tax residence or overseas beneficiaries can all make old pension nominations less suitable.
Sixth, retirement decisions become more connected once you live abroad. A UK pension should be reviewed alongside tax residence, expected spending currency, other assets, future income requirements, estate planning and how much flexibility you need.
A good review should therefore be evidence-led:
- Identify the exact Airbus pension arrangement.
- Confirm the scheme section and benefit type.
- Check pension increase, revaluation and death benefit terms for DB benefits.
- Review fund choices, charges and retirement options for DC benefits.
- Confirm the current trustee, administrator and member contact route.
- Check normal and early retirement options.
- Review beneficiary nominations.
- Compare the pension with other old workplace pensions.
- Compare the existing pension with wider retirement objectives.
A SIPP or International SIPP may offer broader investment choice, consolidation and flexible drawdown. But those advantages should be compared carefully against any Airbus DB guarantees, pension increases, dependant protections, workplace DC charges or safeguarded features.

It is used solely to gather the information needed to analyse the pension properly.
What your Airbus UK pension review may lead to
Keep the Airbus pension where it is
This may be appropriate where the pension provides valuable DB income, pension increases, spouse benefits, trustee oversight, suitable workplace investment options or protected retirement terms.
Compare consolidation options
If you have several old pensions from Airbus or other aerospace and engineering employers, consolidation may improve visibility, but only after checking whether valuable benefits could be lost.
Review SIPP or International SIPP options
A SIPP may offer flexibility, investment choice and drawdown access, but it must be compared carefully against any Airbus DB guarantees, workplace benefits or protected features.
Build a retirement income plan
Your Airbus pension should be reviewed alongside other pensions, investments, cash, tax, currency and future spending needs.

For Airbus UK pension members, particular care may be needed where benefits sit in the Airbus Group UK Pension Scheme, Airbus Group UK Retirement Plan, a DB section, DC arrangement, AVCs, transferred benefits, legacy benefits, safeguarded benefits or multiple historic employer records.
Investing involves risk. Pension and investment values can fall as well as rise, and you may get back less than you invest.
